addressing crime and safety in Phillips

In any city, issues of crime and safety are central to people wanting to live a quiet, productive life, raise their children, and enjoy peace and tranquility among their neighbors in their elder years. Phillips has long taken a strong, pro-active stance toward achieving peace and tranquility in the community. The Safety Center on Franklin Avenue across the street from the Franklin Avenue Community Library, is an important piece of building safety in the community, as are the other building blocks listed below.

Franklin Avenue Safety Center

The Franklin Avenue Safety Center, located in the Ancient Traders Plaza, is the result of a partnership between the Minneapolis Police Department, the American Indian Business Development Corporation, and community and resident groups.

The goal of the Safety Center is to increase police presence in the neighborhood, empowering residents and fostering livability in Phillips. The Safety Center is also fostering police-community relations by bringing folks together to fight crime and improve the neighborhood.

Community Crime Prevention / Safety for Everyone (CCP/SAFE)

CCP/SAFE crime prevention specialists work with individual neighborhoods to reduce the fear of crime, improve community and police cooperation and improve the quality of life in Minneapolis neighborhoods.

The crime prevention specialists provide educational materials and programs, develop working relationships with the community and assist residents in reducing the opportunity for crime and in solving problems in the community.

The Weed and Seed Program

Weed and Seed is a program to assist cities and communities in addressing issues of neighborhood decay in areas of the country hard hit by crime, drug activity and violence. Minnesota established its own Weed and Seed Initiative in 1996. There are three sites in Minneapolis: Phillips, North and Central.

National Night Out

National Night Out, coordinated by Minneapolis Community Crime Prevention/Safety for Everyone (CCP/SAFE) of the Minneapolis Police Department, is designed to help create healthy neighborhoods block by block, helping neighbors to know one another, to celebrate community and to take steps to make neighborhoods safer for the children, elders and all residents. National Night Out helps form good relationships between the community and the Police Department. CCP/SAFE and NNO help to create a neighborhood network to find ways to prevent crime and to enhance the livability of neighborhoods and the city.
