community gardens
Community gardens are universally recognized as community assets,
though it's sometimes difficult to agree on the definition of a
community garden. (See below.) At one time Phillips had over thirty
of these gardens, but as the cost of housing soared during the late
1990's and the early part of the present decade, their number dropped.
At present, there are only a half dozen or so in Phillips, but these
surviving gardens seem securely placed in their home neighborhoods.
They are a wonder to visit.
